Yukon is a small city of around 27,000 people on the western edge of the Oklahoma City metro area, sitting squarely on historic Route 66. For road-trippers driving the Mother Road, Yukon is a reliable stop with a couple of genuine Route 66 landmarks and a friendly, unhurried atmosphere.
The town's biggest claim to fame is Garth Brooks, who grew up here and attended Yukon High School. A large grain elevator along Route 66 is painted with "Yukon's Best" — one of the most photographed flour mill signs on the entire route, and a perfect roadside Americana shot. The town also hosts the annual Czech Festival each October, a nod to the Czech and Bohemian immigrants who settled the area in the late 19th century, featuring kolache baking contests, polka dancing, and craft booths.
Yukon is not a destination in itself, but as a stop on a Route 66 drive through Oklahoma it is worth pulling over for. Grab a photo of the grain elevator, stretch your legs along the old alignment, and continue west toward El Reno and beyond.
