The stone marker on a quiet, sloped street above Hendricks Park is where Steve Prefontaine died on the night of 30 May 1975, at 24, on his way home from a meet at Hayward Field. The site has become a place of pilgrimage for distance runners and a low-key memorial to the figure who, more than anyone, made Eugene a running town.
It is unmarked except for the rock itself, a plaque, and the offerings — race medals, ribbons, drained bottles of Gatorade, the occasional pair of running shoes — that runners leave on the ledge. Most arrive on foot, jogging up Birch Lane from the park; you can also drive and park briefly at the curb. A short, quiet visit; bring nothing or bring something to leave.
