Pacific City

Small Oregon coast village with Cape Kiwanda dunes, dory boats, and a huge offshore sea stack

Pacific City is a small beach village on the north Oregon coast, backed by the pale sandstone headland of Cape Kiwanda and fronted by the Pacific. It is not polished in the way Cannon Beach is polished, and that is part of the appeal: fishing dories still launch through the surf, surfers wait on the shoulder of the cape, and a huge Haystack Rock sits offshore like a blunt exclamation point.

The town is best treated as a beach-and-headland day, not as a full resort base. Climb the dune at Cape Kiwanda for views down the sand, watch waves batter the soft cliffs, then walk the beach toward Haystack Rock as the light changes. On summer mornings, the Pacific City dory fleet gives the place its most local scene.

Pacific City also sits on the Three Capes route, so it pairs well with Cape Lookout and Cape Meares. But it is strong enough for its own stop: a compact place where the Oregon coast feels active, windy, and very close.
