The 1776 fieldstone house at 89 Steinwehr Avenue is the oldest building in Gettysburg, built two decades before the town was incorporated. The house served as a stop on the Underground Railroad — a small crawl space behind a false fireplace hid escaped enslaved people moving north — and as a field hospital during the battle.
The downstairs is now a candlelit colonial-style tavern serving traditional American food; the basement Springhouse Tavern is the more casual option. The atmosphere lays it on thick, but the building itself is the real attraction.
