Things to Do

The main attraction in Gettysburg is the Gettysburg National Military Park, the site of the largest and bloodiest battle of the American Civil War. Fought over three days in July 1863, the Battle of Gettysburg resulted in over 51,000 casualties and marked a turning point in the war. The park covers more than 6,000 acres and can be explored by car, bicycle, or on foot. The visitor center includes an excellent museum and the restored Cyclorama painting.

The Soldiers' National Cemetery was dedicated on November 19, 1863, when President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address. The cemetery contains more than 7,000 interments, including over 3,500 from the Civil War. It is located within the National Military Park. Address: 97 Taneytown Road. Open dawn to dusk.

The Majestic Theater on Carlisle Street originally opened in the 1920s and has been beautifully restored to its original grandeur. It hosts performing arts events, concerts, and film screenings. Tel: 717-337-8200. Website: gettysburgmajestic.org. Address: 25 Carlisle Street.
