The high ground at the southern edge of the town, the anchor of the Union "fishhook" position on the second and third days of the battle. The hill saw a Confederate twilight assault on the second day that briefly broke through Union artillery batteries before being repulsed.
The summit, with its monuments and old Evergreen Cemetery, is an easy walk from the town centre. The view back across the cornfields toward the Confederate positions makes the strategic value of the hill self-evident.
