Evergreen Cemetery Gatehouse

The little brick gatehouse and its twin-arched entrance to Evergreen Cemetery survived the battle in roughly its current form, though the family living inside fled to the cellar as bullets struck the walls. The cemetery is older than the National Cemetery and the place was the focal point of fighting on East Cemetery Hill.

The gatehouse is now a small museum, occasionally open to visitors, with material on Elizabeth Thorn and the civilians caught up in the battle.

A story
Elizabeth Thorn — the wife of the cemetery's superintendent, six months pregnant, with her husband away at war — buried 91 soldiers in the cemetery by herself in the weeks after the battle. A statue in the gatehouse complex honours her.
