National Aviary

The National Aviary on the North Shore occupies a converted greenhouse in West Park and is one of Pittsburgh's more underrated attractions — it is not heavily visited by tourists, which means you can take your time. Several of the walk-through aviaries allow birds to fly freely around you, including a penguin habitat where African penguins waddle past without any barrier. The wetlands aviary, the tropical rainforest, and the grasslands room each have their own distinct ecology and bird populations.

The aviary has active breeding programmes for several endangered species, including the Andean condor and the hyacinth macaw, and keeper talks at feeding times are informative without being patronising. Children love it; adults with any interest in birds tend to be genuinely absorbed. The location in West Park makes it easy to combine with the North Shore stadiums (PNC Park for the Pirates, Acrisure Stadium for the Steelers) if you're in the neighbourhood. Open daily year-round.

A story
The National Aviary holds the only free-flight African rainforest aviary in the United States, where visitors walk among hundreds of African birds that are not enclosed in any cage. The aviary was designated "National" by an Act of Congress in 1992 — the only institution in the United States with that designation for birds. Its collection of more than 500 birds from 150 species includes several species that are among the rarest birds in captivity anywhere in the world.
