Storybook Land

A free outdoor park inside Wylie Park dedicated to nursery rhymes and fairy tales, Storybook Land is the kind of place that delights five-year-olds and quietly charms their parents too. Walk-through sets depict the houses of the Three Bears, Humpty Dumpty's wall, the Old Woman in the Shoe, and dozens of other tableaux scattered across landscaped grounds.

The Land of Oz section is the centrepiece — a yellow brick road winding past Dorothy's farmhouse (toppled by the tornado), the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion, with the Emerald City at the end. There is also a small train, carousel, and Wylie Thunder coaster operating in summer. Admission to Storybook Land itself is free; the rides require a small fee.

A story
L. Frank Baum lived in Aberdeen from 1888 to 1891, running a struggling variety store called Baum's Bazaar before turning to journalism and, later, children's books. The Land of Oz section here, with its yellow brick road and Emerald City, was added in 1995 — a hometown nod to a resident the town now treats as its most famous son.
