West Campus / The Drag

Guadalupe Street along the west edge of the University of Texas campus has been known as "The Drag" since at least the 1960s — a dense strip of student-oriented restaurants, bookshops, coffeehouses, and independent businesses that serves both the UT community and the adjacent residential neighbourhoods.

The Inner Sanctum Records and Half Price Books are the shopping highlights for music and book lovers; the Cain & Abel's Bar and several coffeehouses serve as social anchors for the student population. The Drag is less glamorous than South Congress or East 6th Street, but it has a genuine neighbourhood character that those more touristic strips lack. The "Hi, How Are You" mural at 21st Street is technically on Guadalupe, and the walk from the mural north to the UT campus gives a good sense of the street's character.
