San Antonio Museum of Art

A wide-ranging collection housed in the redbrick towers of the former Lone Star Brewery on the Museum Reach section of the River Walk, north of downtown. The collection covers ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; Asian decorative arts; a strong Latin American section; and European paintings from the medieval period through the 20th century.

The Latin American collection is the standout — one of the finest in the United States, covering pre-Columbian ceramics, Spanish colonial religious art, and modern Mexican and Latin American painting. The Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Latin American Art occupies a purpose-built wing. Admission is reasonable; free on Tuesdays.

A story
The museum's home — the former Lone Star Brewery — was built in 1884 and is as interesting as much of what's inside. The brewery's distinctive towers and sky bridges, repurposed as museum galleries, make it one of the more handsome adaptive reuse projects in Texas. The Roman urn collection mentioned in Atlas Obscura is genuine — marble cinerary urns from the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, acquired from a Roman estate.
