Tower of the Americas

A 750-foot observation tower built for the 1968 World's Fair, anchoring Hemisfair Park on the south edge of downtown. The observation deck at 579 feet gives the best panoramic view of the city — the missions to the south, the downtown skyline, the curve of the river, and the Hill Country rolling away to the northwest. On clear days you can see all the way to the Medina Lake.

The Chart House restaurant at the base of the observation deck revolves slowly, completing a full rotation every hour. Admission to the observation deck is a few dollars; the restaurant requires a reservation. The park below is pleasant to walk, with a wading pool and public art installations.

A story
The Tower of the Americas was built for HemisFair '68, San Antonio's World's Fair, which marked the 250th anniversary of the city's founding. At the time of its completion, it was the tallest building in the United States outside New York and Chicago. The fairgrounds below it are now Hemisfair Park, and the Berlin Bear donated by West Berlin for the 1968 fair still stands in the park — one of Atlas Obscura's more charming San Antonio entries.
