A reconstruction of the fur-trading post established by Miles Goodyear in 1845, Fort Buenaventura gives a tangible sense of what pre-railroad Ogden looked like. The log palisade, cabin interiors, and period equipment are authentic in feeling if not in original material — the original fort was long since demolished. State park staff in period dress explain the fur trade and mountain man culture, particularly on living history weekends.
The surrounding park is pleasant: cottonwood trees shade the Weber River bank, there are canoe and kayak rentals in season, and a pond popular with migrating waterfowl adds natural interest. The annual Mountain Man Rendezvous held at the fort each spring is one of Utah's more entertaining historical events, drawing participants in full buckskin kit for shooting competitions and period crafts demonstrations.
