Salt Lake City's bar scene is shaped by Utah's unusually restrictive liquor laws, which historically required "private club" memberships for hard liquor, limited beer to 3.2% ABV in grocery stores, and made the state's relationship with alcohol a running national joke. Recent reforms have loosened some restrictions, but the legacy gives the city's bar culture a distinct character — serious craft beer venues and cocktail bars coexist with a large population that doesn't drink at all.
The craft beer scene is genuinely strong, anchored by Wasatch Brewery and Squatters (under the same ownership) and joined by a growing number of smaller breweries in the Granary District. For coffee, the 9th and 9th neighbourhood has the best concentration of independent cafes.
