Huntington Park and Beach

Public beach and park under the James River Bridge — small but the best swimming spot in town

The James River Bridge crosses the river just to the north, and Huntington Park sits under its southern end. It is a 60-acre city park with a small sandy beach on the James, the Newport News Tennis Center, a fishing pier, and a Vietnam War memorial. The water is brackish and the beach is no Outer Banks, but on a hot summer day it is the easiest swim in the city.

The Virginia War Museum sits in the same park — a small but well-curated collection covering American military history from 1775 onwards, including a captured German Luftwaffe Junkers Ju 388 fuselage and a piece of the Berlin Wall.
