Du Mare Restaurant

Du Mare sits on the Christiansted Boardwalk in one of the old Danish warehouse spaces, with tables that look directly out over the harbor toward Protestant Cay. The menu focuses on Caribbean seafood — grilled or pan-seared fish, shrimp in garlic butter, conch fritters — with a few meat and pasta options for the less adventurous. It's a step above the pure tourist trap and a step below the high-end resort dining, which makes it the practical choice for a good dinner without driving across the island.

The wine list is decent for the Caribbean, and the rum selection is serious. At lunch, a fish sandwich on the boardwalk terrace in the trade wind breeze is about as pleasant as eating in the tropics gets. The service varies; aim for a table outside even if the air conditioning inside seems appealing — the harbor view earns its place.
