Mercado Municipal

Andean market with coca leaves, peppers, and empanadas

The city's central market is the best place to take the pulse of Jujuy's Andean character. Stalls sell dried herbs, coca leaves, colourful woven textiles, and enormous quantities of peppers and potatoes in varieties unknown further south. The food section in the inner hall serves cheap, filling lunches — empanadas jujeñas (stuffed with spiced meat and potato) and humitas (steamed corn parcels) are the local staples worth trying. Go in the morning for the fullest scene; by mid-afternoon things slow considerably.
