The city's main square is anchored by an equestrian statue of General Belgrano and surrounded by the cabildo, the cathedral, and the Casa de Gobierno of Jujuy Province. Old orange trees line the paths, dropping fruit in spring; locals gather on benches in late afternoon when the heat eases.
It's a good place to start a walk through the centre — most of the colonial-era buildings worth seeing are within a few minutes. The square also hosts ceremonial events on national holidays and the changing of the flag bearers in front of the Casa de Gobierno.
