Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica

The Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica is, on paper, a vertical cemetery — the tallest in the world, at fourteen storeys high. In practice it is one of the strangest buildings in Brazil: a giant brutalist tower full of stacked marble crypts, with a chapel on each floor and roof terraces overlooking the city.

Public access is allowed and the upper floors are surprisingly compelling: ranks of family vaults, hush, and long views over the port and beaches. It is among the most-visited sites in Santos since Pelé was interred here in 2023 — but it is interesting on its own as an example of Brazilian functionalist architecture pushed to its logical conclusion.

A story
Pelé is buried in a private chapel on the ninth floor, his coffin set into a wall mosaic of the Santos pitch. The memorial draws steady streams of visitors paying their respects.
