The Orquidário Municipal de Santos, opened in 1945, is a small zoo and orchid garden a few blocks back from the beach. It has a respectable collection of tropical orchids in a glasshouse, plus enclosures of Brazilian birds, monkeys, alligators, and (the local favourites) two-toed sloths.
Many of the animals are rescued from illegal trafficking. The park is shady and walkable, with a children's playground at the centre. Entry is modest. Avoid Sunday afternoons in school holidays unless you like crowds.
