Basilica of Santo Antônio do Embaré

A few hundred metres back from the beach near Boqueirão, the Basílica Menor de Santo Antônio do Embaré is one of the most photogenic buildings in Santos: a stark neo-Gothic church in red brick and pale stone, finished in 1945 after decades of construction.

The interior is more restrained than the exterior, with high vaulted ceilings and modern stained glass. The church is a couple of blocks from the seafront and easy to combine with a beach walk; afternoons are best for the light on the western facade.

A story
The basilica's tall neo-Gothic spires are reinforced with steel salvaged from the Belgian and Portuguese-built railways that once carried coffee from the interior to the port. The architects could not afford traditional stone construction and improvised with what came to hand at the docks.
