Santuario Otún Quimbaya

Cloud-forest reserve full of hummingbirds and howler monkeys, an hour from town

A small but rich flora and fauna sanctuary in the Otún river valley, an hour east of Pereira on the road towards Parque Nacional Los Nevados. The reserve is administered by Colombia's national parks system and protects one of the best preserved patches of Andean cloud forest on the western slope of the cordillera.

The bird list runs to over 200 species, including several endemic hummingbirds and the famously elusive cock-of-the-rock. Howler monkeys are commonly seen at dawn and dusk from the visitor centre. There is basic lodge accommodation if you want to stay overnight and walk the trails before the day visitors arrive; otherwise a half-day visit from Pereira is enough to get a sense of what the high-altitude rainforest looks and sounds like.

A story
The flora and fauna sanctuary protects 489 hectares of Andean cloud forest that recovered from coffee plantations and timber concessions in only a few decades — a useful counterargument to the idea that tropical forests cannot heal.
