El Acuario (La Piscinita)

A shallow sandbar reached by a 15-minute boat ride from the main pier, El Acuario is the most famous snorkelling spot on the island. The water is barely waist-deep in places and astonishingly clear, with nurse sharks resting on the sandy bottom and dense schools of tropical fish drifting through the coral. Boats leave from the north harbour throughout the morning; agree a pick-up time before your skipper heads off.

The sandbar is also called La Piscinita — the little swimming pool — and the name fits: you wade rather than swim, and the fish come to you.
