Puerto López is a small fishing town on Ecuador's central Pacific coast, set around a broad bay in Manabí province. It still wakes up with the fishing boats, pelicans, frigatebirds, and buyers crowding the sand near the pier, but it has also become the main base for Machalilla National Park and boat trips to Isla de la Plata.
The town itself is simple: a malecón, seafood restaurants, tour offices, beach bars, and low-rise streets running back from the water. The reason to come is the coast around it. North of town, Los Frailes is one of mainland Ecuador's best beaches, with dry-forest trails and quiet coves inside the national park. Inland, Agua Blanca adds Manteño archaeology and a sulphur lagoon managed by the local community. Offshore, Isla de la Plata brings blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, turtles, and seasonal whale watching without the cost or logistics of the Galápagos.
Puerto López is not polished, and that is part of the appeal. It works best for travellers who want a few days of boats, wildlife, fish suppers, and dusty coastal heat rather than a resort strip.
