The Amazon Rescue Center is a worthwhile conservation stop on the road from Iquitos toward Nauta. It is best known for caring for orphaned or rescued Amazonian manatees, but visitors may also learn about turtles, monkeys, birds, and the pressure wildlife faces from illegal trade and habitat loss. The visit is educational rather than showy.
Because Iquitos is the main base for Amazon trips in northern Peru, the centre works well before or after a river excursion. It gives useful context for the animals travelers hope to see in the wild, and it is particularly good with children. Go with realistic expectations: this is a rescue and rehabilitation facility, not a zoo built for spectacle.
