Teatro Solís

Uruguay's most important theatre occupies a neoclassical building on the edge of the Ciudad Vieja, a short walk from Plaza Independencia. The Solís hosts opera, ballet, theatre, and classical music and functions as the country's premier cultural venue. The building was restored extensively in the early 2000s and the combination of period exterior with modern facilities is well done.

Guided tours of the building run regularly and are worth taking — you get to see the main auditorium with its horseshoe balconies and gilded detail, plus some of the backstage machinery. Check the programme for performances during your visit; a night at the Solís is one of the better Montevideo experiences.

A story
The Teatro Solís took over 50 years to build. The foundation stone was laid in 1841 and the theatre finally opened in 1856 — by which time the architect had died and several construction crews had come and gone. A major restoration completed in 2004 preserved the neoclassical exterior while transforming the interior into a fully modern performance space.
