The city museum occupies the old San Juan de Dios hospital, an attractive late-19th-century complex of arcaded courtyards and tiled corridors. The permanent collection covers the history of Lara state and Barquisimeto specifically — pre-Columbian ceramics, colonial-era religious art, photographs and ephemera from the city's growth in the 20th century.
It also runs a programme of temporary exhibitions, often of contemporary Venezuelan painting and sculpture. Hours can be erratic depending on staffing and the political situation; check before crossing town for it, but if it is open it is a rewarding hour.
