Obelisco de Barquisimeto

The 75-metre concrete obelisk at the western edge of the city is Barquisimeto's universally recognised landmark, planted in the middle of a large traffic circle where Avenida Vargas meets the road out toward the airport. Drivers use it as a navigation reference; locals use it as a meeting point.

It is most photogenic at golden hour, when the late sun lights the white shaft against the dust haze coming up off the Turbio valley. The surrounding redoma is busy day and night with taxis and improvised food stalls.

A story
The Obelisco was built in 1952 to mark the fourth centenary of the city's founding by Juan de Villegas in 1552. A spiral staircase climbs all 75 metres to a viewing platform at the top, though it has been closed to the public for years — the structure is now strictly a landmark.
