Osu Castle

Former Danish slave castle turned seat of government

Address Osu, at the seaside end of Cantonments Road

Built by the Danes in 1661 as Christiansborg, this whitewashed seafront castle was a slave-trading post, a colonial governor's residence, and after independence the seat of Ghana's government for half a century. The presidency moved out in 2013 and the castle is now occasionally open for guided tours; check ahead before turning up. Comparable in history, if not in setting, to the larger castles at Elmina and Cape Coast.
