Buchanan Beach

Buchanan Beach runs for kilometres along Waterhouse Bay, broad and almost always empty outside of a handful of fishermen and the occasional group of children. The sand is golden, the surf is consistent, and there is virtually no development — a few palms, the odd fishing pirogue pulled up on the shore, and not much else.

The water is generally swimmable but rip currents are common along the Liberian coast, so be cautious. The beach is best in the dry season (November to April); in the rainy months it can be windy and the surf rough. For a beach this accessible from Monrovia, the emptiness is remarkable, and that is the appeal.
