Things to Do

Buchanan's attractions are mostly about atmosphere — long Atlantic beaches, a working iron-ore port, and a handful of nineteenth-century settler buildings across the river in Edina. A day or two is usually enough.

The Port of Buchanan is the biggest thing in town: a deep-water harbour built by LAMCO in the 1960s for shipping iron ore from the Nimba mountains, now repurposed for general cargo and a renewed iron-ore export operation. Walking the long, mostly empty Buchanan Beach is the obvious thing to do at sunset. Across the Saint John River, the old settler town of Edina is worth a half-day visit for its handful of surviving timber houses and the sense of an older Liberia.
