Fanti Town is the fishing quarter at the southern end of Buchanan, settled generations ago by Fanti migrants from Ghana who came down the West African coast to fish the Liberian waters. The community is still predominantly Fanti-speaking and the men still go out in long wooden pirogues at first light to fish the bay.
Mornings are the best time to visit — the boats come back in and there is a quick informal market on the beach as women sort, gut and sell the catch on the spot. The smoked-fish stalls a little inland are part of the local Liberian food supply chain. It is a working community, not a tourist attraction, so a little respect for the daily rhythm goes a long way.
