LAMCO Railway and Yards

The LAMCO railway runs 267 km from the iron-ore mountain at Yekepa, near the Guinean border, down to the Port of Buchanan. Built in the early 1960s by a Swedish-American consortium, it was one of the largest engineering projects of its era in West Africa, crossing dense forest, rivers and hill country to get the ore to tide-water.

After decades of disuse during and after the civil war, the railway has been rehabilitated by ArcelorMittal and trains now run again. The yards in Buchanan are visible from the road approaches to the port — long lines of ore wagons, locomotives, and the unmistakable rust-red staining of iron-ore dust on everything. Industrial archaeology aficionados will find it a rare sight in this part of Africa.
