Buchanan is the county capital of Grand Bassa, and the County Administration Building, along with the Superintendent's office, sit in the centre of town. The buildings themselves are modest mid-twentieth century affairs, but they are still the place where county business is conducted and a focus of local civic life.
Around the offices is the small but busy commercial core of Buchanan — a few shops, a market, and the main bus and shared-taxi stand for onward travel. It is the most practical orientation point in town and a good place to start a wander.
