Kendeja, about 16 km from Monrovia, combines a beach with a living cultural village. Descendants of freed slaves resettled here in the 19th century still practise the crafts their ancestors brought — weaving, carving, and dyeing — and the village has become one of the few places in Liberia where traditional West African artisanal techniques can be observed.
The beach here is quieter than Elwa and the setting more attractive, backed by palms and the old village. A cultural centre near the beach sometimes hosts demonstrations of traditional crafts and music. It is worth combining a visit to the beach with a walk through the village to see the weavers at work. Best reached by taxi from Monrovia.
