Mellah

The Mellah is Marrakesh's historic Jewish quarter, established in the 16th century when the sultan relocated the Jewish community to this walled enclave near the royal palace. It remains distinct from the surrounding Medina, with houses featuring outward-facing balconies and windows, a contrast to the inward-looking riads elsewhere. The Bahia Palace, a 19th-century vizier's residence of staggering decorative excess, is the headline attraction. The Lazama Synagogue, still functioning, offers a quiet glimpse into the community's long history, though Morocco's Jewish population has dwindled dramatically. The spice market on Place des Ferblantiers is more relaxed and less predatory than the main souks. The Mellah has a melancholy atmosphere, with many of its grand houses falling into disrepair, but that faded grandeur is part of its appeal.
