Temara

Atlantic city south of Rabat, known for its beach, old kasbah walls, and capital-suburb rhythm.

Temara is a coastal city directly south of Rabat, essentially a southern suburb of the capital. Its main draw for visitors is Temara Beach, a long stretch of Atlantic sand popular with Rabatis on summer weekends. The beach can get crowded but has a relaxed atmosphere and a string of cafes along the promenade.

The city has Almohad-era origins — Sultan Abd al-Mumin founded it in the 12th century — and the old kasbah walls built by Moulay Ismail still stand. The Rabat Zoo, technically within Temara's limits, is notable for its Barbary lion breeding programme. Beyond these attractions, Temara is primarily residential and makes a convenient and cheaper alternative base to Rabat if you have a car.

Getting There

Temara is about 12 kilometres south of Rabat and is easily reached from the capital by shared taxi (petit taxi or grand taxi) from Rabat's central taxi stands. The journey takes 20-30 minutes outside rush hour. A train on the ONCF line between Rabat and Casablanca stops at Temara (Gare de Témara), though the station is not centrally located and a short taxi ride is needed to reach the beach.

By car, Temara is directly south on the main coast road. Parking near the beach is available but can fill up on summer weekends.

Things to Do

Temara's main attraction is its Atlantic beach, which is quieter and less developed than the beaches near Casablanca. The old kasbah walls are worth a look for those interested in Morocco's medieval fortifications. The Rabat Zoo, technically within Temara's limits, is a significant attraction for families. The town is most usefully visited as a day trip from Rabat or as a base when accommodation in the capital is full or expensive.
