Officially the Our Lady of Victories Cathedral but better known as the Cathédrale du Souvenir Africain — the African Memorial Cathedral — this is one of the more unusual French colonial church buildings in Africa. It was completed in 1936 as a memorial to African soldiers who died fighting for France in the First World War.
The architects, Henri Bovet and Paul Tournon, tried to create a synthesis of European and African styles: Romanesque and Byzantine domes meet vernacular Senegalese motifs in the carved doors, the painted ceiling, and the iconography of the apse. The result is striking and faintly strange, set in a quiet square at the southern end of the Plateau. Visitors are welcome outside Mass times.
