Henriette Bathily Women's Museum

Small museum on Île de Gorée devoted to the lives and work of Senegalese women

The Musée de la Femme Henriette Bathily on Île de Gorée is small but rewarding — a single restored Goréen house turned into a thematic display of the work, dress, ritual and daily life of Senegalese women through history. Exhibits include kitchen tools, woven cloth, marriage objects, healing instruments and photographs from the 19th century onward.

It is named after Henriette Bathily, an early Senegalese feminist activist who pushed for the museum's creation. After many years on Gorée it briefly moved to the mainland, then returned. Combine with the Maison des Esclaves on the same island visit; the contrast — the brutal trade museum, then a quieter celebration of survival and continuity — is well worth the half-hour.
