Chef's Pride

Long-running Kisutu canteen — best biryani and naan in the centre.

A no-frills two-storey restaurant in the Indian quarter at Kisutu, Chef's Pride has been packed at lunchtime for twenty years. The menu runs to several hundred dishes — Indian, Swahili, Continental — but you order the biryani (chicken or mutton), the chapati, a fresh lime soda, and watch the room work. The crowd is half local clerks on a lunch break and half taxi drivers waiting for fares; the turnover is fast, the food unfussy, the bill startlingly cheap.

Open from late morning until late evening every day. Walk-in only. The street outside is busy and the parking impossible; arrive by bajaji or taxi if you can.
