Jampa Lhakhang, also written Jambay Lhakhang, is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, and the central image is a statue of Jampa, the Buddha of the future. The building itself is plain and low — a whitewashed structure with a paved courtyard — but it carries deep religious significance and is held to be among the founding sites of Buddhism in the country.
The temple comes alive each autumn during the Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival, when masked monks perform the famous "naked dance" (Tercham) in the small hours of the night — a rare and old ritual believed to bless infertile women. The festival usually falls in October or November; if you can time a visit to coincide, it is an extraordinary experience.
