Lamay Gonpa, sometimes spelled Lamai Goempa, is a small monastery and former palace just south-west of Jakar, on the slopes above the Chamkhar river. It served as the summer palace of Bhutan's first king, Ugyen Wangchuck, in the early 20th century and later became a monastic centre.
The building itself is in the traditional Bhutanese style, with whitewashed walls and dark wood balconies, and the setting among meadows and apple orchards is characteristic of the valley. It is a quick stop on the way out of town, often combined with a walk up to Jakar Dzong on the opposite ridge.
