Mebartsho, or the Burning Lake, is not really a lake but a deep pool and gorge on the Tang Chhu, one of Bumthang's most revered sacred sites. It is associated with Pema Lingpa, the 15th-century treasure revealer said to have entered the water with a burning lamp and returned with hidden Buddhist teachings.
Prayer flags, offerings, and the sound of the river make it an atmospheric stop, but the rocks can be slippery and the current dangerous. Visit respectfully, stay back from the edge, and combine it with the temples and villages of the Tang Valley.
