Tamzhing Monastery

Tamzhing Lhundrup Monastery lies across the Chamkhar river from Kurjey, an easy walk on a footbridge. It is the chief seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition and contains some of the oldest religious murals in Bhutan, many of them said to have been painted by Pema Lingpa himself in the early 1500s.

The interior is dim and cluttered with statues, butter-lamp altars, and faded frescoes — the kind of working monastery where the centuries are layered visibly on top of one another. Resident monks are usually welcoming to visitors. Combine a visit with Kurjey Lhakhang and Konchogsum Lhakhang for a half-day walking circuit.

A story
Tamzhing was founded in 1501 by Pema Lingpa, the great treasure-revealer of Bhutan, who according to tradition designed and forged the monastery's iron chainmail armour himself — pilgrims still try it on for blessings, though it weighs around 25 kilos.
