Luhuitou Park

Hilltop park with a giant deer sculpture and panoramic views over the city

Luhuitou Park covers the hilly peninsula that juts south between Dadonghai and Sanya Bay, and from the top — a steep but well-signposted climb, with shuttle buses for those who don't fancy walking — you get the single best panoramic view in the city. On a clear day you can see Yalong Bay to the east, the whole stretch of Sanya Bay to the west, and Phoenix Island sitting in the water below.

The name means "Deer Turns Its Head," from a Li ethnic legend commemorated by a 12-metre granite deer sculpture on the summit. Below the summit, paths wind through subtropical forest past pavilions, a small lake, and various smaller sculptures. The park is at its best at sunrise or sunset, when the light catches the city below. There is an admission fee and the gates close around 10 pm.

A story
The park takes its name from a Li ethnic legend: a young hunter chased a deer across all of Hainan until they reached this very headland. Cornered on the cliff, the deer turned its head and transformed into a beautiful woman, who became the hunter's wife. The 12-metre granite sculpture at the summit commemorates the moment of transformation — a deer mid-turn, looking back over its shoulder.
