Wuzhizhou Island

Coral-rimmed island off the northeast coast, the best spot near Sanya for snorkelling and diving

Wuzhizhou Island sits about three kilometres off the northeast coast of Sanya, a small (1.5 square kilometre) coral-fringed island that has become the main snorkelling and diving destination in the area. A ferry runs continuously from Houhai Wharf in Haitang Bay — the crossing takes about ten minutes — and the entry ticket (which includes the boat) covers access to the beaches, walking trails, and the lookout points on the island's central ridge.

The southern coast has the deepest water and the best coral, and most of the water sports operations are concentrated there. You can rent snorkelling gear, take a try-dive with a guide, ride a banana boat, or — for substantial money — jet around the bay on a flyboard. The north side has quieter beaches and walking paths through the scrubby coastal forest. A handful of luxury overwater bungalows opened on the island in the 2010s, but most visitors come as a day trip; the last ferry back leaves around 5 pm.

A story
Wuzhizhou was uninhabited until the 1990s, when developers cleared part of it for a resort and turned the rest into a marine park. The reef around the island has held up better than most in the area thanks to the no-fishing zone, and on a clear day the water visibility around the southern shore can exceed twenty metres.
