Luobi Cave — the name translates as "Dropped Brush Cave" — is a karst cave system in the hills just north of Sanya, set in a scenic park of subtropical forest and rock formations. The main cave runs for about 70 metres and is fitted out with paths and coloured lighting that make it feel a little theme-park-ish, but the geology is genuine and the chambers are large.
The story attached to the cave is that a Tang dynasty scholar dropped his brush here, and the surrounding cliffs are inscribed with calligraphy from various dynasties. The park around the cave is the main reason to visit — there are walking trails through the forest, viewpoints over the surrounding countryside, and a small ethnographic display on the Li people. It is a quieter alternative to the major coastal attractions and can be done as a half-day trip from the city.
