Mongolian Cultural Performance Venues

Several venues in central Hohhot combine dinner, traditional Mongolian music and dance performances, and the ceremonial drinking of airag — fermented mare's milk, the alcoholic drink of the Mongolian steppe — into an evening event that is simultaneously touristy and genuinely entertaining. The performances include morin khuur (horsehead fiddle) music, throat singing (khoomei), and wrestling demonstrations, and the airag is actually served (and is much more palatable than you might expect from a drink made from horse milk). These venues cater primarily to Chinese tourists from outside Inner Mongolia rather than foreign visitors, which keeps them more honest than the equivalent entertainment dinners in many Chinese cities.

The better venues are in the old town area near Dazhao and along the commercial street running south from Xinhua Square. Book in advance for weekend nights; the shows are popular with tour groups and seats go fast. Prices are moderate to high by Hohhot standards; the entry fee typically includes the meal and one drink.
