Hohhot has two metro lines that cover the main areas visitors use: Line 1 runs east-west through the city centre and connects the high-speed rail station at Hohhot Dong to the old town and the western districts; Line 2 runs roughly north-south. The system is clean, inexpensive (fares from 2 yuan), and bilingual in Chinese and Mongolian. Metro signage is in three scripts: Chinese, Mongolian traditional script, and English.
Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive; most drivers use the meter without prompting. Ride-hailing apps (Didi) work reliably in Hohhot and are often faster than street hailing. For visits to the Wang Zhaojun Mausoleum, the White Pagoda, or the Shengle ruins, taxis or hired cars are the practical option — these sites are outside the metro network. For grassland trips, guesthouses can arrange minibuses or cars; independent hire is also easy at the main hotels.
