Getting There

High-speed rail is the standard way to reach Hohhot from Beijing. The G-class trains on the Beijing-Hohhot line take about two and a half hours from Beijing North; multiple departures run daily and the journey is comfortable and reliable. The new Hohhot East station (Hohhot Dong) is the high-speed terminus and is well-connected to the city by metro and taxi.

Hohhot Baita International Airport (IATA: HET) is about 15 kilometres east of the city centre and has frequent flights to Beijing (under 2 hours), Shanghai, and major Chinese cities, plus seasonal connections to Ulaanbaatar. From Beijing, the train is almost always faster door-to-door than flying. Long-distance buses from Beijing also run to Hohhot, taking about five hours on the expressway; they arrive at the Hohhot Long-Distance Bus Station, which is centrally located.

International visitors can also enter from Mongolia via the Trans-Mongolian Railway, which passes through Erlian, several hours north of Hohhot. The Erlian–Hohhot leg takes about five hours by train or bus.
